On this day in 2004: British student Tom Hurndall dies from his wounds after being shot directly in the head by an Israeli sniper for attempting to carry Palestinian children out of the line of fire

Hurndall was unarmed and wearing the internationally recognized peaceworker’s fluorescent orange jacket. He was struck down on 11 April 2003 and never regained consciousness. He died nine months later at a London hospital on 13 January 2004.

The sniper who pulled the trigger, an award-winning marksman whose rifle had telescopic sight, admitted that a policy of shooting at unarmed civilians existed at the time.

Here is a little something: We are up at the top of this mountain in Sa Pa, approximately a mile high above sea level, the sun is out, the wind is blowing, the air is thin but it was so so so damn fresh feeling.
We are at an area where there are tents and people selling food and souvenirs’, this young girl keeps approaching me to sell these keychains she had.
After about 15 minutes of, for lack of a better term ‘begging’, I finally buy one - I ask to photograph her. She agrees to, I then take a Polaroid of her. I give her the Polaroid as a gift back and she becomes silent, everyone is silent.
They watch the Polaroid develop, the girl smiles. The smile of an ecstatic girl who has never seen a photograph of herself.

Yesterday in Chicago, more than 300 balloons were released in downtown Grant Park — one balloon for each child killed during Israel’s 22-day assault on the Gaza Strip three years ago.

Attached to the balloons were the names and descriptions of each child. The organizers, the youth-led Chicago Movement for Palestinian Rights, stated in their call for the event:

The balloons are 100% biodegradable and the cards will be made from flowerseed paper. So wherever they land, these cards will plant seeds in the ground that will bloom into beautiful flowers in the spring. This is our way of paying tribute to the memory of each child.

At least a hundred people attended (this is my conservative estimate) and organizers announced that people came from out of state to participate. Attendees assembled in Millennium Park and marched to Grant Park, chanting solidarity messages.

A similar action was planned the day before in the occupied West Bank village of Nabi Saleh, which recently mourned the murder of Mustafa Tamimi, killed after he was shot in the face by a tear gas canister during the village’s weekly protest. The Israeli army and border police repressively dispersed Friday’s protest and arrests were reported.

The Believing Woman,
One of the most prominent distinguishing features of the Muslim woman is her deep faith in Allah (SWT), and her sincere conviction that whatever happens in this universe, and whatever fate befalls human beings, only happens through the will and decree of Allah (SWT); whatever befalls a person could not have been avoided, and whatever does not happen to a person could not have been made to happen. A person has no choice in this life but to strive towards the right path and to do good deeds - acts of worship and other acts - by whatever means one can, putting all his trust in Allah (SWT), submitting to His will, and believing that he is always in need of Allah’s (SWT) help and support.
